This has a dramatic new series title, for a pretty dramatic subject. Environmental concerns are of special importance to children, as they will have to live with the consequences of our mismanagement of the planet, and try to sort out the mess we are leaving them. For these books are not so much about an apparently angry planet hitting back, but more a catalogue of problems and disasters of our own making, and of their effects on the natural environment. So, misuse of natural resources, pollution from urbanisation, acid rain and water pollution are among the topics covered: the usual suspects perhaps, but essential to be understood for that very reason ‐ and if understood, perhaps confronted and managed, if too late to resolve or reverse.

Plenty of facts are clearly presented in both text and illustration. With index, glossary and lists of addresses for further information, the books give every opportunity for children (eight‐year‐olds and over) to understand and pursue topics vital for their future. Here is another useful and attention‐grabbing, and highly informative (as well as scientifically accurate) series for the geography and environmental sciences curriculum.
