For many years Chris Mead has been the bewhiskered public face of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), the scientific organisation that has measured the fluctuating fortunes of our bird life since 1933. He has now produced a terrific reference book summarising the position of our breeding birds as we enter the new millennium.
