What a sumptuous volume this is! Unpacking it, one is confronted by a dust‐jacket on the front cover of which is a close‐up of two of the terracotta soldiers from the army that defended the tomb of Qin Shihuangdi, the First Emperor of China. Turning to the back cover of the dust‐jacket we find a colour illustration of a gilded bronze dragon ‐ symbol of strength and fertility, and one of the best‐loved mythological creatures of ancient China. These two attractive illustrations are however, only the merest tasters of the contents of the book.
