Animals in Research; For and Against

If there is one subject that provokes more ill informed passion and outrage, it is that of the use of animals in research. As in all topics, there is much to be said on both sides of the argument. It is certainly true that there have been many extremely cruel and unnecessary experiments on animals, those on sensory deprivation carried out on monkeys being one that comes to mind, but on the other hand many surgical techniques, especially concerning transplants, and many valuable drugs would not now be available if animal experimentation had been disallowed.
