I feel that I know Linlithgow intimately, but in truth have only ever actually stopped and visited the town (and in particular its palace) a couple of times, and those some while ago now. The reason for the apparent familiarity lies in my frequent rail journeys between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The railway is carried into and through the small town on a viaduct at or above the roof levels of adjacent buildings, and often enough the train stops at Linlithgow so that there is plenty of opportunity to examine the town: and what a pleasant view it affords, dominated, of...
