The Castles of Scotland

The turbulent history of Scotland, which for many centuries was seldom free from the threat of domestic conflict or English invasion, has left behind a remarkably large number of castles, 2,700 according to the author of this compendium. He does explain that he has included many of which only the site, or fragmentary ruins, remain, and, at the other end of the historical scale, many large country houses of later date which have the name of “Castle” without ever being fortified except in a decorative sense.
