Paintings of animals have always been very popular with collectors and there is a wealth of such art in existence. One reason for this, is the almost universal custom among sportsmen and the wealthy in the nineteenth century of having their favourite animals committed to canvas. A corollary of this, of course, is that the majority of such paintings are probably still in private hands and so may be unfamiliar to many people.
