Flick through satellite television sports channels at almost any time of the day or night and some weird and wonderful activities are paraded before you. Most of them seem to me to be more for doing than watching, so I don’t dwell on them. But they show just how many activities there are around, and many of them in their various areas are illustrated in these books.
One of the ideas of this series is to attract the less able older or reluctant reader – the kind of kids who would rather be doing the sport than reading about it. The target age range otherwise is eight upwards. There are plenty of hair‐raising (don’t try this at home kids) activities included; some pretty expensive, too – the bike or pony or snorkel kit is one thing, the aerobatic plane another.
Plenty of all‐action colour photographs, clear concise texts, all combined in an interesting and attractive overall design make these books a good bet for their target audience. Parents can decide if there is room in the garage for the power boat or hot air balloon!
