Traditional interpretations of the history of American art have taken European fine art as their starting point. More recent scholarship has looked at the work of previously marginalised groups, such as Native Americans, African Americans and Latinos, and also examined art in media such as ceramics and needlework, previously regarded as “domestic” or “folk” art.
