Learn the stories behind the faces on the postage. Mixing philately and biography, Their Stamp on History delivers a little history lesson on the men and women pictured on recent US stamps. View portraits of the famous and obscure whose images are the targets of cancellation marks. Arranged by name index and subject categories such as inventors, musicians, athletes and actors, the purpose of this collection is to educate readers and serve as a resource for stamp collectors, students, and teachers. It seems ideally suited for a younger audience – perhaps a child beginning a stamp collection.
Information about each stamp is presented beside a biographical profile of the person. Detail on the stamps includes the release date, original value, current value used and unused, and country of origin. The biographical information has been lifted from other WWW sources, which are cited with links provided to the content. However, biographical information is not provided for all subjects. Readers are invited to contribute biographical information to the site.
Unfortunately, there are not many stamps represented: at present, there are only 24 in 12 subject categories. Hopefully, the site will continue to grow so that it may better fulfil its educational mission. A few “related Web sites” did not connect. While this is an interesting concept of possible interest to beginning philatelists and the idly curious, Their Stamp on History is of limited value to either serious students seeking biographical information or knowledgeable stamp collectors.
