This hardback volume is the eighth in a series formerly entitled Garland Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages. Earlier volumes deal with regions (Scandinavia; France; England), civilisations (Jewish) and topics (archaeology; trade, travel and exploration). The series has the ambitious aim of providing “the most comprehensive and detailed view of the medieval world in all its aspects ever presented in encyclopedia form” (p. xiii)
