Although the Spanish‐American War of 1898 was not one of the greatest conflicts of the last two centuries in terms of loss of life or duration, its consequences were far‐reaching for both nations involved. For Spain, defeat brought the loss of almost the last vestiges of a once mighty empire and further domestic conflict that was to lead, 40 years later, to bitter civil war and dictatorship.
