With the completion of the first phase of the human genome project, as the preface explains, a wealth of information on the subject has emerged. The five volume Encyclopedia seems a timely publication from the Nature group, and one that should be a significant addition to published knowledge. This weighty five‐volume set is an international tome with worldwide contributors, a fair number of whom can be considered truly world class. Most articles deal with the central topic of the human genome, though there are a few biographical essays looking at some of the major innovators in the field.
