This is the third in a series of reference books by David Newton. The previous two volumes were Encyclopedia of Fire and Encyclopedia of Water; the second of which I reviewed previously in these columns (RR 2004/32). When asked to review the Water volume I was surprised by the range of topics covered, so I am pleased to see this volume is just as thorough and eclectic in its choice of topics. Just a few will give a flavour of the coverage: Charles Lindbergh, Respiration, Air Brakes, Hurricane, Air Force, Vacuum, Musical References to Air, Parachutes and Hovercraft....
