This is the first of three planned volumes; the second will deal with works printed from 1691 to 2000 and the third will contain indexes of anonymous works, authors, subjects and names. For many people the very word, alchemy, still conjures up associations with attempts by quacks to transmute base metals into precious ones, especially gold.
