I must admit to taking issue with the compiler from the very first paragraph of his introduction when he raises the question “what is cultural studies?” I don't think that cultural studies have reached the cohesive point where they justify a singular. Anthropology, psychoanalysis, sociology, economics, English literature, philosophy, and modern history are, I would submit, coherent academic disciplines with singular identities, but the shifting quicksands between them need a plural.
