This review is being written on 4 July, the date that Louis Armstrong always maintained was the date of his birthday in 1900. Subsequent close examination of the records by researchers shows that he was in fact born on 4 August 1901, but his natural showmanship caused him to associate the anniversary with the more significant date in the history of his country. Armstrong, always less interested in money than in his jazz, the music he helped to make the first American contribution to world culture, promoted the US State Department through tours of Africa and Europe in the 1950s...
