Having recently published their Nelson Encyclopedia (RR 2003/44), devoted to Britain's greatest admiral, Chatham have followed it up with the similarly organized Captain Cook Encyclopedia, dedicated to one of her greatest explorers. The statement I have just made, as the Encyclopedia explains, is nowadays to be regarded as an opinion rather than a fact, for there is a powerful school of thought among indigenous peoples of the Pacific that considers Cook's voyages not as a great exploration, but as a terrible calamity.
