Some reference books never change their appearance (thank goodness) and this year's edition of the Police and Constabulary Almanac (established 1861) is one of them. The danger, though, is that we take them for granted. The book is a densely packed compendium of directory information – “official register” – of the UK police forces and “including Fire Brigades & Ambulance Service, Civil Defences and Court of Law” (sub‐title). There are no crime statistics here, nor details of legislation, but an impressively full listing of services and staff of the bodies covered. Picked at random are the web site, e‐mail address...
