Kennedy has compiled this dictionary almost single‐handed, although he does acknowledge Joyce Bourne as associate editor. The second edition was published in 1994, and this is a revision of that one. It is a handy volume of over 12,500 musical terms, forms, instruments, works, composers, performers, directors, opera houses and other concert halls, festivals and much else. The entries are mostly short but informative. There is some staff notation illustrating clef, curved line, gruppetto, scale and other terms but fewer diagrams.
