It must be rare, autobiographies apart, for the author and her parents to feature on the front cover of a reference work, but here, baby Martha is held aloft by her mother, while Dad is in army uniform with several fellow soldiers. These black and white snaps are a nice touch to an otherwise photo‐less 450 pages of lists and bibliographical references. What would Mum and Dad have thought?
