Epistemology is that branch of philosophy that investigates our knowledge and beliefs, our knowledge of knowledge, the evidence to which we turn to justify beliefs and truth, what we attribute to causation, and how we explain and infer and imply. It is central to philosophy, stays a young subject even though Aristotle and Leibniz and others were fascinated by it, and has many common‐sense applications. Ralph Baergen is professor of philosophy at Idaho State University and has had a long‐standing interest in epistemology and ethics.
