Turbulence and confusion obfuscated events in China during the ten‐year period (1966‐1976) spanned by this intriguing book. Obscurity and controversy persist. The daunting task of elucidation and assessment is now tackled by three erudite Sinologists of the universities of Wisconsin‐Whitewater, California State and Chicago. All have published seminal works on China's Cultural Revolution (e.g. Song and Dajin, 1998; Song and Zhou, 2001; Zhou, 1999), and all are associated with the essential database created by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2002).
