The developing world has always existed, but as an academic concept it is largely a product of the post second world war world. Definitions of the developing world have altered and been refined since then. Today it is generally agreed that membership of the developing world can be defined in economic terms, and also in political and social terms such as the extent of public participation in the political process, the protection of human rights, the availability of education and health care and environmental protection.
