This book, containing over 250 speeches by more than 200 people, is to be welcomed for two reasons. Firstly, because it usefully contains the landmark speeches that are part of our culture, for example Lincoln's Gettysburg Address; Churchill's “We shall fight on the beaches”; Martin Luther King's “I have a dream”; and Kennedy's “Ich bin ein Berliner” – speeches that librarians get asked for. Secondly, it provides a timely antidote to the current doleful standard of speech generally, from the “yoof” culture to the sound‐bite or evasive meaningless of so much current inarticulation exemplified by the School of John Prescott...
