Sherlock Holmes is the world's best‐known detective. He is so famous that he continues to receive letters requesting help at his “address” at 221B Baker Street, London. This is a considerable achievement considering that Holmes first appeared on the scene in A Study in Scarlet in 1887, and that he existed only in the mind of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and in the stories he wrote, which have been translated and published in many languages. And if Sherlock Holmes is the world's best‐known detective then Dr Watson must be the world's best‐known side‐kick!
