The riches of the vast national library collections in Europe have long been the stuff of legend for researchers. Whereas earlier generations of scholars had travel to the site, obtain reader's cards, and often wait days for requested books to arrive, the internet has allowed these repositories to make more of their collection accessible to anyone at any time, revolutionizing the whole concept of a national patrimony of a country's printed words.
