Neither plant nor animal, the great kingdom of the fungi comprises about 70,000 species worldwide and this important reference work depicts their amazing range of morphological structures. It is intended as an illustrative and possibly more approachable companion to Kirk (2001). It includes in context the recent huge changes in classification driven by DNA sequence analyses. It provides substantial information on the 536 currently accepted families, with notes on ecology, descriptions, economic uses etc. A major feature is the collection of high‐quality images, all in colour, totalling nearly 900 illustrations.
