“Yanks go home” seemed to be written on innumerable walls (and ground surfaces so that overflying pilots could read the message) during my schooldays at the height of the Cold War. Hostility to US troops in Europe was driven by a range of motives, from the idealistic (nuclear disarmament) to the specifically jealous (“overpaid, over‐sexed and over here”).
