Now celebrating a 40th birthday, this old friend has started to put on some weight and has about twice the number of pages and is larger than the 1968 first edition. That makes it less easy to carry in the field but in compensation it has 35 more British and Irish species of sedges, rushes and “grasses”, as well as about 50 recognised hybrids. All the maps have been updated since the second edition, and all have been given a full page.
