The scholarly nature of this work and depth of research, which it represents from a respected publisher cannot be disputed. The relevance to libraries in English‐speaking countries is less clear. This is a thorough listing of every territorial unit in Soviet Russia (from 1917), the Soviet Union (1922‐1991) and the subsequent states. The units equate to German Länder, French departments and English counties. The work is in German apart from one page translated into English entitled How to Use this Book (p. 8). As such it would seem to be of limited use to those with English as their first language. Those needing this detailed information about Russian administrative areas probably do not want to have it in German. It might be argued that the information can be found even with limited German, but the Russian names are transliterated into German and therefore do not always equate to British transliterations. A niche market, perhaps.
