I intended to consult my favourite forensic adviser, Professor John Gunn for comments on this book, but then discovered that he was one of the contributors. In fact everyone I know who can give me criminological advice seems to have taken part. Twenty‐five years in the Institute of Psychiatry library has meant that a sizeable proportion of all the British psychiatrists and psychologists with any interest in such matters have passed under my gaze at some point or other.
