Encyclopedia of the Historical Jesus

There is the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. This statement alerts us to the ongoing tension between history and faith. Few topics in theology have created such tension as the debate about the historical Jesus. It has been going on for a long time and historians tend to divide into three phases, called the old quest, the new quest, and the third quest. So it is not by accident that any reader of this work might wish to come in at the entry on the quest for (or of) the historical Jesus itself.
