Having been educated by Jesuits from age eight to 18, I should declare an interest in reviewing this Cambridge Companion. Being at close quarters to Jesuits (as members of the Society of Jesus, the correct nomenclature, are known) through the formative years does not necessarily make one best placed to appreciate those qualities as educators for which the Order is often celebrated, and years later I cringe with embarrassment, not at any treatment meted out at the hands of Jesuits, but at the obnoxious behaviour shown towards these by adolescents.
