In a little over 100 years since the Wright brothers' first powered flight, not to mention events and developments of the preceding 1,000 years, aviation has developed and expanded to such an extent that any attempt to produce a comprehensive encyclopaedia seems foolhardy. In the earlier days and at the height of aviation‐mindedness, Squadron Leader Burge (1935) produced an encyclopaedia that was largely steered to the technical and theoretical.
