A generation ago, anybody who followed politics or even watched TV could have named the most deep‐rooted conflicts of the world: Ulster, South Africa, India v. Pakistan – and of course Israel and Palestine. The first two have found a solution of sorts and India v. Pakistan is relatively dormant at the time of writing. But the Arab‐Israeli dispute is always with us: visceral, intractable, rooted in the very structure of the Middle East.
