It may come as a surprise, except to people who know these things, that there few encyclopaedias devoted exclusively to American philosophy as such. Routledge claims that this new publication is the first complete one ever published, and they may well right. Even entries on “American philosophy” don't always appear in philosophy reference books – not, for example, in The Shorter Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Craig, 2005) (RR 2008/11) or in the magisterial second edition of Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Borchert, 2006) (RR 2006/297).
