This book is about the racism and segregation, which most African Americans suffered in the century after the Civil War. If offers about 300 articles on many aspects of the problem: there are entries on culture and the media, government programmes, famous people, notable events. It does not cover the period of slavery and it does not include the racism experienced by American Latinos, Asian‐Americans, Jews or any other group – not in a major way that is. Chronologically, it peters out in the early 1970s. So as a specialist encyclopaedia, its focus is clear.
