The majority of reference books are arranged in some form of alphabetical order, but this one is strictly chronological. It devotes a chapter to every significant war (with occasional ones allocated to interludes of comparative peace) and within each, every significant action is described in date order. This system usually works quite well, but not always: the wars of independence of the various Spanish colonies being described in one chronological order makes it difficult to follow the progress of each separate campaign.
