First published in 1982 by Michael Joseph, Sir Martin Gilbert's Atlas of the Holocaust – described in its foreword as “the Graphic history of the Nazi attempt to destroy the Jews of Europe” – has appeared under various imprints, most recently that of Routledge in 2002 and 2009. Coming from the biographer of Winston Churchill and an internationally recognised scholar of World War II and the Holocaust, the Atlas made an immediate impression in the 1980s, by no means diminished as a result of the intervening quarter century.
