The present volume is a revision of the earlier edition by the same author, published in 1996. It joins the established series from Scarecrow Press which now covers virtually all of Europe as well as Russia and the former Soviet satellite countries. A revision of the volume on Spain is particularly welcome given the considerable changes which have taken place since publication of the first edition and which have seen Spain exchange the last vestiges of authoritarian government for a forward‐looking democracy within the EU.
