In spite of (or perhaps, typically for London) my exotic Indian/Scottish/Huguenot origins I am a Londoner by birth. A cockney indeed, born within sound of Bow Bells (or I would have been if there had not been a wartime V2 rocket going off at the time) not far from the homes of Marie Lloyd (1870‐1922, Music‐hall artiste) and Joseph Priestley (1733‐1804, Radical dissenting preacher and discoverer of oxygen).
