Ágoston and Masters have compiled a splendid encyclopedia, drawing on the expertise of 90 scholars from Europe, the Middle East, and the USA. This is the first English‐language encyclopedia of the Ottoman Empire, joining a pair of historical dictionaries (Bayerle, 1997 and Somel in 2003) as some of the few reference works available on this dynastic empire spanning nearly 800 years at the borders of the Islamic and Christian worlds.
