As a mysterious ancient people, the Etruscans have for centuries fascinated scholars, artists, and general readers alike. They have left us a tantalising corpus of texts, mainly inscriptions, in a language we can still barely interpret, and cryptic monuments and artefacts. We do not know where they came from, if they came from anywhere rather than developing over thousands of years in their own heartlands of North West Italy, and popular tradition has it that they dominated early Rome until the expulsion of Tarquin the Proud, the last of the kings of Rome.
