This fascinating little volume is filled with 2,000 phrases and sayings that illustrate the beliefs and values of a wide range of cultures and periods throughout history to the present day. The dictionary draws on the larger works of the Oxford Dictionary of Phrase, Saying and Quotation (Ratcliffe, 2006) (2nd ed. RR 2003/256) and the Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs (Speake, 2008) (4th ed. RR 2004/89) as well as the editor's own research. Although Oxford University Press has been publishing its dictionary of proverbs since 1935 this is the first “little” edition to be released.
