With the publication of this work, a joint project by Cambridge University Press and the Royal Irish Academy, the long wait for a proper national biographical dictionary is over. Up to this point Irish historiography has had to rely on a number of sketchy older attempts and the Irish entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (RR 2005/59) (though these are normally restricted to Irish people who had registered on the radar of the larger island before 1922, unless of course they were from the six counties of Northern Ireland).
