London is an ancient city. Not ancient by the standards of Ur or Mojendro‐daro perhaps, but old enough for even the origins of its own name to be lost in the mists of prehistory. Current philological theory suggests that the name “London” may be one of the few surviving words from the language of the pre‐Celtic peoples dwelling in the area.
