British Military Medals: A Guide for the Collector and Family Historian

Identifying military medals and providing information about them is a difficult problem faced by library staff, most of whom will have very little knowledge of the subject. Not only does militaria have its own jargon and context, but also more awkward for staff is the fact that the general enquirer can thrust a medal on to the desk in front of you and ask, with searing bluntness, “What's that?” With words one can re‐phrase, re‐define and hopefully edge the enquirer/librarian dialogue into mutually familiar waters: but not with an object.
