The aim, in 1972, of the first volume of this now well established and respected series was to create a record of the lives of significant members, nationally, regionally and locally, of working‐class parties or movements, trade unions and cooperative organisations. At least 20 volumes were envisaged, individually sequenced as research developed. The review of Volume XI (2003) in these columns critically outlined the background and methodology of the series (RR 2004/188). The new volume continues the established patterns, and is again distinguished by its huge range of personal and biographical sources, and its expert contributors.
