The name “Austria”, as the author of this Dictionary reminds us, has had quite different meanings at different periods. In 1800 it would have applied to the whole of the vast Central European territories of the Habsburgs; in 1900, only to the Western half of what was by then the Austro‐Hungarian Monarchy; and in 2000, to the truncated German‐speaking state resulting from the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire in 1918.
